Alewife TMA’s “Commuter Spotlight” series highlights the commuters who exemplify what the TMA represents. This month, we had a chance to sit down with Sitaram Meena, a Principal Scientist at UCB in Cambridge to learn more about his sustainable commute, which he gladly completes via bicycle, weather permitting.
Alewife TMA: Please tell our readers a little about you-- where do you work and what do you do there?
Sitaram Meena: As a Scientist at UCB, nestled at 87 Cambridgepark Drive, Cambridge near Alewife station, I am part of a passionate team on a mission. At UCB, we are ardently committed to discovering breakthrough solutions for patients facing serious conditions such as epilepsy, psoriasis, osteoporosis, and many more. Every day brings us closer to new hopes and possibilities.
TMA: What does a typical commute week look like for you?
SM: Residing in Everett, I pedal my way to work two to four days a week, weather and schedule permitting. When I'm not on my trusty bike, I glide through the streets in my hybrid car, embracing a blend of eco-friendly travel modes.
TMA: Why do you choose to commute the way you do?
SM: Pedaling through the city on my bike keeps me fit, clears my mind, and saves money while doing wonders for the planet. And hey, every cyclist means fewer cars clogging up the roads for those enduring the daily grind in their vehicles. By biking, you get a consistent and reliable journey and the bonus of staying fit without needing extra gym time!
TMA: What do you like least about your commute?
SM: Navigating the city on two wheels can be quite the adventure but sharing the road with cars when there's no dedicated bike lane can feel like a perilous quest. When the weather turns foul, I'd much rather hitch a ride with reliable public transport than drive the car. But trekking all the way to Boston Downtown and back to Alewife, taking more than an hour each way, isn't my cup of tea.
TMA: How did you learn about the Alewife TMA and what do you like about it?
SM: I discovered Alewife TMA through our employer and flyers in the parking building.
TMA: Do you have a fun or interesting story about your commute you can share with us?
SM: I have many, but this one is good to share. As I pedal through the morning mist, I often cheerfully chirp out a "good morning" to fellow passersby. One day, a curious cyclist trailed me for about 15 minutes, puzzled by my unwavering greetings despite the many silent responses. He finally caught up and asked why I bothered. With a grin, I explained that I don't expect replies; it's just a sprinkle of kindness. I'm not losing anything; in fact, I'm gaining so much. To my delight, even those initially indifferent started to anticipate my greeting, ready with a smile in return. It's a small way to weave connections and spread a little sunshine.
TMA: Thank you, Sitaram for taking the time to share your thoughts with us, and for truly “walking the talk”!
