Getting on your bike to run errands, commute to work, or for leisure is not only possible in Cambridge, but it’s a desirable way to get around. At the Alewife TMA, we want to celebrate that! The City of Cambridge has invested heavily in its biking infrastructure, making it one of the top bike-friendly cities in the United States. Cambridge is committed to making biking safe and attractive for people of all ages and abilities, whether they have been riding for years, just learning to ride, or utilizing the greater Boston’s bike share system Blue Bikes,
Clearly marked bicycle lanes line many of the streets in Cambridge, and mixed-use paths from the Minuteman Bikeway to the Linear Park make traveling by bike a viable mode of transport to move through Cambridge neighborhoods and connect to nearby communities such as Arlington, Somerville, Belmont and Boston. Looking for new routes or trails to try while riding in Cambridge? Check out this excellent list of bike trails in Cambridge.
Additionally, Cambridge has expanded access to cyclists and pedestrians on their roadways, by partially closing Memorial Drive in River Bend Park to vehicles on the weekends. This “shared streets” initiative by the city further encourages active transportation and demonstrates Cambridge’s commitment to prioritizing people over cars and making biking accessible for everyone.
Another reason we love biking - it’s a fun and a wonderful form of exercise with long-lasting health benefits. Studies suggest that those who cycle to work are 46% less likely to develop cardiovascular disease and it can reduce the risk of developing cancer. As a regular form of exercise, cycling can help to reduce blood pressure over time, and reduce body fat and body mass. When it comes to mental health, cycling reigns supreme. Those who exercised regularly experienced better mental health outcomes than those who didn’t. Regular cycling is also associated with a reduction in anxiety and depression.
